The Fabled #7 Tradition Set To Return Next Season

Valencia will be all smiles with his new shirt number.

From George Best to Ronaldo, Bryan Robson to Eric Cantona, the #7 shirt at United has been synonymous with United’s greatest wingers and an official announcement from the club today will see Antonio Valencia take up the reigns from next season onwards.

Tony was imperious last season and rightfully picked up multiple gongs at the Player Awards last season including the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award as well as the Players’ Player of the Year Award.

After coming back from injury in November, he went from strength to strength and was United’s attacking lynch pin in our storming mid to late season form. He was our main outlet and we always looked like we were going to get a chance to score when Tony was on the ball.

He may be a one trick pony but why fix something that isn’t broken? Defenders can’t do anything against him. The pace he has over the first 15 yards is electric and his final delivery is superb. Last season, he threw in 178 crosses and bagged himself 13 assists.

Traditionalists put their face in their hands when they saw that Michael Owen had been given the shirt but fans will certainly be flocking to get “Valencia #7” on the new home shirt ahead of the new season. We can all look forward to the beautifully reminiscent memories of seeing the #7 shirt flying down the wing.
