Danny Welbeck must start for England against France at Euro 2012

With Wayne Rooney banned for the first two games at Euro 2012, Roy Hodgson has to make a decision as to who he wants to play as his main striker but for me, his mind must already be made up.

Danny Welbeck’s accomplished finish against Belgium from Ashley Young’s delightful through pass was his first international goal and it came after five weeks of not playing a competitive match. If he can pull off a finish like that after very little playing time, who is to say what he can do if he is giving a starting berth for all of England’s games.

It was a natural goalscorer’s finish, classy and elegant, from a player who has improved massively this season. Alongside Rooney at United, he provided some of the best link-up play that we had and with Young against Belgium, the link-up play was there for all to see.

Surely Roy Hodgson can not even consider starting Andy Carroll ahead of Danny Welbeck? Welbeck’s pace and energetic movement brings some dynamism to the static 4-4-2 that we are likely to play. If Carroll was to play, we would play the long ball game and only frustrate ourselves.

The thoughts of Welbeck, Young and Rooney making up the England attack is a great prospect. Whether it happens remains to be seen.
