BREAKING: Tom Cleverley injured against Ajax

Rumours circulating this morning that Cleverley picked up another ankle injury against Ajax last night that will keep him out of the England squad. The FA are set to make an announcement soon.

Tom was far from match fit last night in a midfield pairing that forced him to try and do everything without a defensive midfield partner and it has obviously taken its toll on the young midfielder.

Any ligament injuries are difficult to recover from but if his ankle ligaments have flared up again, Tom could find himself out for an extended period of time. This comes as a massive blow as I was excited to see Tom back in the first-team frame to bring some much needed variety to a midfield situation that was hardly steeped in choice.

The unfortunate reality is that Tom has has spent a substantial period of time on the sidelines over the last few seasons as a consequence of injuries. In March 2007, he suffered a long-term injury that kept him out for seven months whilst playing for the U18s. In 2009, whilst on loan at Leicester City, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury whilst playing against Colchester United. Also, in April 2010, Tom was on the wrong end of a horrific tackle that caused him knee ligament damage.

Was Tom rushed back into the first-team framework? From his 60 minute performance against Ajax in Amsterdam, I would say not. He seemed comfortable during the game and never once seemed to be holding back to protect his ankle.

All we can do is hope that Tom has done nothing more than tweak his ankle and has not done any real damage.
